Eterna Mode GmbH
Eterna Mode GmbH is one of Germany’s oldest and most iconic shirt and blouse manufacturers, founded in 1863 and headquartered in Passau, Bavaria. The company built its reputation on high-quality men’s and women’s shirts, blouses, and accessories, selling millions of garments annually through its own stores, retailers, and online channels. It has historically operated production facilities in Europe and supplied thousands of retailers worldwide.
Reasons for insolvency
In December 2025, Eterna filed for insolvency in self-administration at the Passau District Court after years of financial strain. A key trigger was the failure of a planned sale-and-lease-back transaction involving the company’s Passau headquarters; some creditors refused to approve the deal, depriving Eterna of crucial liquidity.
Broader challenges also weighed heavily: (1) structural pressures on the traditional fashion retail market, (2) falling demand for classic business apparel, and (3) lingering impacts from the pandemic weakened sales and profitability. The company had already been in restructuring since 2021, and despite support from investors, customers, and suppliers, it ultimately sought the protections of insolvency to finalize its turnaround plans.
Outlook for the future
Under the self-administration process, Eterna plans to continue operations under the existing management team, with support from a restructuring expert. Key elements of the restart strategy include:
- Outsourcing logistics to streamline operations and cut costs.
- Completing the sale-and-lease-back of its property to free up cash for ongoing business needs.
- Modernizing collections and pursuing international growth, especially in womenswear and new product lines.
The insolvency framework also gives Eterna legal flexibility (e.g., special termination rights for contracts) to execute these changes and attract potential investors. The aim is to stabilize finances while preserving as much of the business and workforce as possible.
